Greeting from the General Chairman

General Chairman Lars Halter (with '09 Grand Marshal Linda Schmidt)

Welcome Friends!

After a great Steuben Parade in September 2009, complete with thirty entertaining groups directly from Germany and tens of thousands of spectators alongside Fifth Avenue, we are in the process of planning the festivities for 2010. And we are inspired by the grandiose events last year.

Let´s just remember some highlights: Our Grand Marshals, Congressman Michael McMahon from Staten Island, Fox TV star Linda Schmidt, Christian Haub, CEO of A&P and Steuben Parade co-founder Ted Dengler, led the parade together with other German-American celebrities and dignitaries, including Eric Ulrich, the youngest member of the New York City Council – and himself a German-American.

The parade paid tribute to German-American baseball legend Lou Gehrig on a float sponsored by the New York Yankees; one float remembered the moon landing by German-American pioneer Neil Armstrong. Several other floats were completely redesigned, with Schaller & Weber´s nice play on the Steuben Parade scene in “Ferris Bueller´s Day Off” and the Hofbräu brewery presenting the tallest liter mug in the world.

We are now looking forward to another year of German-American Friendship and cultural event s throughout the city. Don´t miss the Crowning of Miss German-America in May, and a Strauß Gala also set for spring.

September will once again be German-American Friendship Month in New York City, and we will be hosting movie nights and a Jam session featuring German Jazz musicians from all over town – plus special guests. The Steuben Parade itself will be held on Saturday, September 25th, one week later than usual but hopefully on another sunny and warm Manhattan weekend.

I am looking forward to seeing you all on Fifth Avenue… until then, best regards.

Lars Halter
General Chairman
