JazzKraut at Iridium

German musicians have been a part of the New York Jazz scene for decades, and these days the crop is better than ever. See and hear some of today´s best vocalists and instrumentalists in two sessions at one of the world´s greatest jazz clubs. Among others, pianist "Vana" Gierig, bass players Iris Ornig, and Martin Wind, guitarist Sebastian Noelle, drummers Philipp Gutbrod and Christian Finger, and harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens take the stage at the legendary Iridium, joined by singers Micaela Leon and Karen Kohler. Other players are Maximilian Schweiger and piano player Axel Schwintzer.

Semmelrogge´s Achterbahn

"Life is a roller coaster", says Martin Semmelrogge - and he would know. One of Germany´s most prolific actors, he starred in "Das Boot" and "Schindler´s List", innumerous TV productions, and has been in trouble with authorities, too. Enormous success in Germany, good times in Hollywood, and DUI´s, Semmelrogge has been there and he wrote about it in his auto biography "Das Leben ist eine Achterbahn." He will read excerpts in German and English, supported by Swiss-American guitar player Roman Elsener.

Alpine Thunder Cruise

We take to the water with New York´s Number One Alpine Rock band "Die Schlauberger". Party on a four hour cruise around New York. See if the "Fischerin vom Bodensee" has a sister in the Hudson River, and look for "Rehbraune Augen" on the Statue of Liberty. Food and beer is free; grilled brats and other German specialties are served, and German beer is on tap all night.

"Little Cloud Upset"

Meet scholar and author Michaela Hertkorn as she reads from her most recent children's book "Little Cloud Upset", that introduces preschoolers and young children to international relations and global affairs. The central character is a little cloud that travels across the globe observing all sorts of global challenges. The cloud flies over melting ice caps, watches children play in refugee camps and remembers witnessing the fall of the Berlin Wall. Ages 5 and up.

Blume´s Short Movies

Having grown up in Eastern Germany with working stints at the official TV station of the GDR as well as theaters in Berlin and Magdeburg, Michael Blume has grown to be one of Germany´s most interesting film makers. His productions have drawn some of the country´s best acting talent. Blume will present five of his latest shorts, among them the Thomas Mann themed "Heiligendamm" featuring Hanna Schygulla, and "Atem der Fische".

The Voice of… Biedermeier

Christian Brückner has one of the most prominent voices in Germany regularly lending it to Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Donald Sutherland and others for the German version of Hollywood blockbusters. In a special reading he now lends his vocals to Adalbert Stifter, one of the most significant authors of the Biedermeier era. Brückner will be reading from "Der beschriebene Tännling" in two separate sittings.

Becoming a German

Born into Germany´s darkest chapter, Rick Landman lost 17 members of his family in the Holocaust. He did not lose his love for Germany, though, and kept in touch with his roots, visiting Germany many times and speaking on German-Jewish relations all over the United States and Europe. In 2007, he even became a German citizen and today he explains why. This event is part of the "Transatlantic Lunch" series sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD).

 Exhibition: Berlin Passages

Legendary American photographer Leonard Sussman has captured people, landscapes and the mood of each of his subjects for more than four decades. He sees his challenge in structure and form and had his black-and-white work exhibited all over the world. His first digital color project lead him to Berlin and right into the Underground, where he found cityscapes between gritty reality and gentle lyricism.

Exhibition: Oktoberfest

Right on time for its 200th Anniversary, the world´s biggest party is subject to a photographic homage on display in this exclusive exhibition. In 2004, renowned photographer Marden Smith first aimed his lens at the colorful spectacle that is the Munich Oktoberfest, and he has returned many times since shooting workers and visitors, capturing moments and staging others. The artist will be present at the opening of this show.

New York´s most colorful parade brings together hundreds of marching groups from all over the United States and Germany. Line up anywhere alongside Fifth Avenue, or, for a better view, get a ticket for the Grand Stand. Don't miss the brand new Entertainment Stage at the end of the parade route.

OKTOBERFEST

New York´s largest Oktoberfest starts immediately after the Steuben Parade. Most of the bands and groups from the parade continue to perform here, the most enjoyable "Alpine Squeeze" play on stage. A highlight will be the 2nd Annual US Championship in Masskrugstemmen, a Bavarian strong man (and woman) contest. Contestants hold a filled one liter mug with their outstretched arm. Finalists will be in town from all over the US to win the Grand Prize, a trip to Munich with a visit to the world famous Hofbräuhaus. Arrive early to grab a table in the tent, or find your spot on the bleachers or in front of the stage. Buy your tickets early; this event always sells out fast.

Oompah on Long Island

Every year, the Oompah Fest in Franklin Square, Long Island, is the traditional finale to German-American Friendship Month. This Oktoberfest-style party draws thousands of thirsty fans with its awesome atmosphere under the old trees at "Plattduetsche Park". Enjoy many of the bands who have performed during the Steuben Parade and dance off to local acts. Try your luck at the Shooting Range, preferably before emptying your pitcher of Hofbräu or one of many other freshly tapped brews.
