The German-American Steuben Parade Committee is proud to add two more highlights to its ever growing event: German Olympic Figure Skater Norbert Schramm will be riding a float in the "Bavarian Division", and Aarne Bielefeldt, German-born star of Beard Team USA and audience-favorite of the IFC-Reality-Show "Whisker Wars", will ride a Mercedes-Benz convertible in the Metropolitan Division. more

German-American Steuben Parade Announces Hosts for TV Broadcast

The German-American Steuben Parade is proud to announce that Laura Savini and Theresa Statz-Smith will be the hosts of its first Live-Broadcast on Public Television. The program will air on Saturday, September 17, at 12 Noon on WNET (Channel 13, New York). Ms. Savini and Ms. Statz-Smith, two celebrated TV personalities, will be hosting live from a stage on Fifth Avenue overlooking the 54th staging of this colorful and proud display of German-American tradition, culture and history. more

ACHIM HEUKEMES: COAST TO COAST AND BACK

In June, German extreme athlete Achim Heukemes began a unique cross-country trip: He rode his bike from New York City to San Diego, CA, averaging 150 miles a day, then turned around to run back to New York, averaging 65 miles per day - that´s more than two marathons per day. At over 3,200 miles each way, his adventure presents one of the greatest feats in sports history. more

Travel Channel´s Samantha Brown named Grand Marshal of German-American Steuben Parade

With just a few months to go until the 54th Annual German-American Steuben Parade, the Parade Committee has named the Grand Marshals leading this year´s event. They include Samantha Brown, the popular host of Travel Channel´s "Passport to Europe", as well as Ilse Aigner, German Secretary of Food, Agriculture, and Consumer Protection, Erik Bettermann, Director of Deutsche Welle, and the newly installed German Ambassador to the United States, Peter Ammon. more

Great news for German-Americans everywhere: For the first time ever, the Steuben Parade will be televised live on PBS thanks to a commitment from local New York stations WNET thirteen and WLIW21.

The German-American Committee of Greater New York is proud to announce that Miss Denise Manukian has been crowned Miss German-America 2011! The crowning took place Saturday, May 21st during the "Maifest on the Hudson" co-sponsored by World Yacht Cruises on Pier 81, and the German-American Steuben Parade Committee, which celebrates its 54th Annual Parade on September 17, 2011.more

CROWNING MISS GERMAN-AMERICA ON PIER 81

"I had a great year as Miss German-America," says Stephanie Russell-Kraft with royal smile. Born to a German mother and American father on the very day when then-President Reagan first declared a "German-American Day" for the United States, Stephanie represented the community for a year at numerous events, TV appearances and, of course, on her float in the Steuben Parade, flanked by her court. On May 21st, 2011, her reign is over and a new Miss German-America will be crowned.more

Steuben Parade teams up with Hofbräu Bierhaus NYC

Good news for German-Americans… and anybody else who enjoys a freshly tapped German brew and tasty food: On Thursday, March 10, the brand new "Hofbräu Bierhaus NYC" will open in midtown Manhattan.
The latest addition to the New York bar scene is not a full-fledged Hofbräuhaus like the ones in Pittsburgh and Las Vegas, but rather a nice Biergarten-style restaurant/bar with a capacity for 200 people.more

STEUBEN PARADE PROCLAMATIONS ARE TRIBUTE AND HISTORY LESSON

They are given out regularly and sometimes without much fanfare: Proclamations. The German-American Steuben Parade is honored to be awarded with several every year, but regrets that sometimes too few people get the chance to read what legislators (and their staff) write there. This is unfortunate, because many Proclamations aside from expressing respect for the German-American heritage, its culture and traditions are also quick lessons in German-American history.more

West Point Cadets drink to Steuben at their Oktoberfest

For many years, Officers and Cadets from the Military Academy at West Point have marched in the Annual Steuben Parade to pay tribute to the Prussian General who helped establish the Academy on the Hudson River and wrote the drill manual that to date is the basis for military training in the US Army. Recently, the Officers and Cadets of the German Language Club celebrated Oktoberfest, and members of the Steuben Parade Committee were in attendance.more

President Obama proclaims "German-American Day"

For over two decades, October 6th has been celebrated as "German-American Day" in the entire USA. This holiday was first declared by then President Ronald Reagan who signed the first proclamation in 1987.
Today, President Barack Obama has followed and just signed the presentation for 2010, in which he remembers the arrival of the first German settlers on October 6th, 1683 as well as the achievements of many who came after them. The President also mentions the strong ties between Germany and the United States in today´s time and the shared vision of both countries for "a safer, more free, more peaceful, more prosperous world".

STEUBEN PARADE MAKES HEADLINES ALL OVER GERMANY

“German-American Friendship Month” has started with a bang – or, to be precise – with four bangs hammered out by “Dr. Ruth” Westheimer as she closed the trading session at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday with a giant wooden gavel. “Dr. Ruth”, legendary sex therapist and author, is a Grand Marshal in the upcoming Steuben Parade and has been a Guest of Honor at two exciting events on the first day of September.more

The legendary Therapist and Author will be a Grand Marshal on Fifth Avenue

German born sex therapist, author and media legend “Dr. Ruth” Westheimer will be a Grand Marshal in the upcoming German-American Steuben Parade on Fifth Avenue on September 25th, 2010. Every year, the German-American Committee of Greater New York honors one or more distinguished German-Americans with that title and has them lead the colorful parade up Fifth Avenue. more

The month of September 2010 will be “German-American Friendship Month” in the city of New York, as the Mayor´s office has now confirmed. It is the fourth consecutive time, that the city honors German-American culture and the contributions of immigrants from Germany by dedicating an entire month of celebration, in which German-Americans organize many events and festivities. more

Pub Crawl was a blast!

This year's German Pub Crawl was far an absolute blast! The once again sold out event, a staple of the German-American Friendship Month each and every year, started at "Zum Schneider's" in the "alphabet city" area of Manhattan, went across the East River to Williamsburg - where we made two stops at "Radegast" and "d.b.a." - and ended at the "Lederhosen NYC" in the West Village area of Manhattan. more

A TASTE OF HISTORY, CORNISH GAME HEN AND A LITTLE BOCK...

If you did not attend "A Taste of History" at the historic Fraunces Tavern in NYC, you missed quite a treat! The event, hosted by the German-American Steuben Parade Committee of NY as part of its German-American Friendship Month, was one of those events that the Committee puts together but once a year in the hopes of giving back a little bit of History…and then some. more

German-American Friendship Month started big this year - literally. Consul General Dr. Horst Freitag, joined by the Steuben Parade Committee and guests rang the Closing Bell at the Nasdaq Market Site and had the ceremony, their pictures and the Steuben Parade cornflower logo projected eight stories high in the middle of New York´s busy Times Square. more

On May 17th, 2009, amid much fanfare, Miss German America and her Court, 2009, were elected. Over 200 people were in attendance, mostly members and leaders of the German-American Community of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. more

When I left work this past Friday I found myself in the elevator of my building with a colleague. When the doors opened on the ground floor, I said: "Have a nice weekend, and a Happy Presidents' Day". He looked at me like I had made a joke. "You are German", he said. Breathtaking action and fascinating stories end German-American Friendship Month 2008

Tuesday, September 30 marked the end of this year's Friendship Month with a showing of Award-winning director Pepe Danquart's latest movie "To the Limit"at Tribeca Cinemas.
The movie "To the Limit" tells the story about the Huber brothers from Bavaria, two of the world's best rock climbers, and their attempt to beat the speed climbing record at "The Nose" in Yosemite National Park.more

The 51st annual German American Steuben Parade was a huge success

Over 100,000 people turned out to watch more than 2,000 marchers from Germany and the United States at this year's 51st German-American Steuben Parade in New York.
The day began at 7am with two bands from Germany showcasing their talents on CBS The Early show. It was a spectacular picture, the green and white band from the Tambourcorps Grün-Weiß Bonn Oberkassel and the red and blue of the Musikcorps Bickenbach, the lead band of the parade.more

On Monday evening, September 8th, Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially proclaimed the month of September to be "German-American Friendship Month" in the City of New York.
In front of over 100 leaders of the German-American community, at a reception held at "Deutsches Haus at NYU," the Mayor talked about his own experiences with Germans, German-Americans and his further experiences learning the German language.more

German-American Friendship Month kicked off last Friday with a colonial feast and beer tasting sponsored by the German/Bavarian brewery Hofbräu at New York's oldest Restaurant Fraunces Tavern.
